What causes diffusion pumps to overheat?
There is a temperature limit switch on the pump.Β This could be faulty.Β Possibly low oil level and/or insufficient water flow.Β The water cooling tubing is a long and tortuous path and poor water quality could cause these lines to partially clog.Β Mineral deposits and dirt in the lines.

See lessWhat is the pumping capacity of an oil diffusion vacuum pump?
Pumping capacity varies depending upon the size (diameter) of the pump and the gasses you are pumping.Β The manufacturers usually rate them according to their ability to pump air and helium and hydrogen.Β See this old Varian file for additional information on diffusion pumps.Β 05_Diffusion_Pumps
